The primary and most important function of horticultural sand is to improve soil drainage. Poor drainage is one of the most common causes of plant failure in UK gardens, particularly in clay-heavy Scottish soils that retain water and become waterlogged during periods of heavy rainfall. When water sits around plant roots for extended periods, it displaces oxygen in the soil, causing root rot, fungal disease, and ultimately plant death. By incorporating horticultural sand into your soil, you open up the structure, create essential air pockets, and allow excess water to drain away freely — creating the well-aerated, free-draining conditions that the vast majority of garden plants, vegetables, and bulbs require to thrive.

Blended with our organic 10mm screened compost, it produces a fertile, free-draining, multipurpose loam that is ideal for raised beds, container growing, seed sowing, and potting on.
