One of the most valued uses of decorative bark mulch is weed suppression. When applied at the recommended depth of 5–8 cm, it forms an effective physical barrier across the soil surface that blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds below. Without light, germination is dramatically reduced — saving you hours of weeding throughout the growing season. For even more effective results, lay landscape fabric beneath the bark mulch to create a dual-layer weed suppression system that is virtually maintenance-free.
Beyond weed control, our decorative bark mulch plays an important role in moisture retention. By covering the soil surface, it significantly reduces the rate of evaporation during warm or windy weather — keeping the ground beneath moist and your plants hydrated for longer between waterings. This is particularly beneficial during dry Scottish summers and for plants that are sensitive to fluctuating soil moisture levels.
As the bark mulch slowly breaks down over time, it releases organic matter and trace nutrients into the soil beneath, gradually improving its structure, fertility, and long-term health. This natural decomposition process also encourages earthworm activity and beneficial microbial life — both of which are essential components of a productive, living soil ecosystem.
Our decorative bark mulch is ideal for garden borders, pathways, tree and shrub bases, ornamental beds, and commercial landscaping throughout Glasgow and Scotland. Available in 850 ltr bulk bags with local delivery. Contact us today to place your order.
